Drosera field

Round-leaved sundew (Drosera rotundifolia L.) is a tiny plant that weighs less than one gram. However, for the treatment of cough and airway diseases its effects are known since the 13th century.

Large scale destruction of mires in Europe and the collection of sundew from natural habitats resulted in a dramatic decline in European sundew populations. Attempts to cultivate the plant were expensive and subsequently abandoned. We developed a method to sustainably cultivate sundew in paludiculture, by reestablishing its natural bog habitat. This provides reliable procurement of Drosera herbae to the phytopharmaceutical industry.
